Interview | Nicole Ameline on GR40

The equal and inclusive participation of women in decision-making is a fundamental and necessary step in addressing global challenges. To implement effective solutions, women, in all their diversity, must have equal opportunities to help shape the laws and institutions that govern societies and impact their lives.

General Recommendation 40 (GR40), adopted by the CEDAW Committee in October 2024, is an innovative legal framework that redefines women’s participation in decision-making as parity and equal exercise of power. GR40 addresses the systemic inequalities that perpetuate exclusion and discrimination by establishing gender parity in the political, economic and social sectors, both nationally and internationally.

In an exclusive interview, Nicole Ameline, member of the CEDAW Committee and chair of the GR40 drafting group, shares her perspectives on why the GR40 represents a paradigm shift and its potential to advance gender equality in decision-making spaces.
