Expert Meeting on Feminist Economies and Women’s Participation in Decision-Making Systems.

GQUAL and the Gender and Law Programe of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA)’s Law School organized a two-day expert meeting aimed at providing critical insights for the drafting of CEDAW’s future General Recommendation No. 40 (GR 40). The meeting was held on April 29th and 30th, 2024, at the UBA Law School, with the participation of CEDAW member, Nicole Ameline, chair of the GR40 drafting working group, and representatives of CEDAW’s Secretariat.

During the first day, a group of experts discussed feminist economies, feminist economic policy, feminist fiscal justice, and their relation to the equal and inclusive participation of women in decision-making spaces, at the national and international levels. The following day, a group of representatives from  civil society and academia provided comments and suggestions to the draft of the GR40 from different human rights perspectives. We thank Amnistía Internacional Argentina, Ni Una Menos, ELA,  Red de Profesoras of the UBA Law School,  Red de Profesoras of La Plata University, Center for Human Rights of the UBA Law School, Gender and Law Seminar UBA,  Paraguayan Institute of Constitutional Law, CELS, ANDHES, FARN, ACIJ, FUNDAR, and CEJIL for their insightful and interesting contributions.

The aim of this expert meeting was to bring perspectives of the Global South, especially from Latin America, to the CEDAW GR40 draft. Key issues such as the links between parity and democracy, the right to care, equal access to justice, and participation in the design of economic and fiscal policies with a gender perspective, were discussed.

Side Event: “Right to equal and inclusive participation of women in decision-making systems. Focus on justice”

After the  expert meeting,  GQUAL, CEJIL, and the Gender and Law Programe of the UBA Law School co organized an event to highlight the importance of appointing women to national and international justice tribunals. The event included the participation of recognized experts from Argentina such as Mónica Pinto, Mary Beloff, Marisa Herrera, Natalia de la Torre, Viviana Krsticevic, and Laura Clérico. This conversation was particularly significant as it occurred on the 30th anniversary of the 1994 constitutional reform, which gave CEDAW constitutional hierarchy in Argentina and after the government nominated two men to fill two vacant positions in the federal supreme court, already composed only by men.
