Call to Action: Women and the Ocean, A call for Equal and Inclusive Ocean Governance

Who gets to decide the future of our oceans?
At the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), GQUAL joined forces with Women for Sea, Movilizatorio, and the Wildlife Conservation Society and others to spotlight a question too often ignored — and to demand transformative change.

Despite their essential role in marine conservation and sustainability, women remain vastly underrepresented in the spaces where key decisions about our oceans — and our planet’s future — are made.

A major outcome of the event was the launch of a bold Call to Action for advancing gender-equal and inclusive ocean governance. We urge governments, international bodies, and institutions to step up and:

  • Eliminate the structural barriers and biases excluding women from leadership
  • Require gender parity in selection and appointment processes
  • Ensure equal access to funding, employment, and leadership in ocean-related sectors
  • Collect and use gender-disaggregated data to drive accountability and track progress

GQUAL is proud to co-sponsor this Call to Action and we invite our partners and allies to share and support as well.

Because there is no sustainability without equality.

This is a key moment to amplify this call. Join us and help share the Call to Action:
